"The Merchant of Venice" by William Shakespeare is a comedy about Antonio, a Venetian merchant who borrows money from the Jewish moneylender Shylock to help his friend Bassanio woo the heiress Portia. When Antonio cannot repay the loan, Shylock demands a "pound of flesh". Portia, disguised as a lawyer, saves Antonio by proving the contract is invalid.
